Desert Pavilion
An open-air exhibition space situated in the Mojave, utilizing vast geometric overhangs to manipulate shadow and light over the course of the day.
01
Challenge
Extreme heat and blinding sunlight made standard gallery framing impossible without massive HVAC loads.
02
Approach
By studying the solar path, we designed an asymmetrical cantilever roof that provides total shade to the artwork while remaining entirely open to the wind.
03
Solution
A passive-cooled structure using packed earth and rusted corten steel that blends seamlessly into the desert floor.
